Karen Naifeh Harmon "Obsidian" for Kinga Augustyn Kinga Augustyn, Violin Solo From the Composer: "Obsidian" (2024) by Karen Naifeh Harmon Program Notes. "I had a dream about Kinga, the virtuoso violinist who performs the most demanding repertoire with ease....she reminds me of a sharp, beautiful, dark and crystalline object. I dreamt about a composition that I titled “Obsidian” - very fitting as it is produced from felsic lava, rich in silica, granting it high viscosity. This leads to the formation of mineral crystals which gives it a shiny, glassy effect. This substance has fractures with sharp edges, the sharpest of all violinists...The most glamorous and dangerous of violinists. Much like her piercing stare and unwavering focus, Obsidian originates from lava flow of an exploding volcano. Kinga creates the coolest sounds on her fabulous violin, forging a cooling barrier to turn the molten magma into a stunning piece of solid rock. Obsidian employs this dichotomy of beauty and danger through pounding notes and glassy effects with harmonics and flying pizzicato."
