This is a visual annotation of the Finale from Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10 in E-minor. The movement is in ternary form. It begins with a meditative Andante section calling back the mood of the opening of the first movement. An opening theme in the low strings alternates with a wistful second theme in the woodwinds. The mood is abruptly changed in the Allegro, with a hopeful upbeat tune in the violins that builds to a profound climax. As the tension mounts, Shostakovich briefly reprises the dark specter of the "Stalin theme" from this work's second movement before fiercely and confidently restating his signature DSCH motif in triple fortissimo to conclude the section. As others have written, it seems clear that the composer is setting to music his personal triumph at the death of Stalin, as if to say "I have survived you, bastard!" Material from the A and B sections return, before we are swept into one of Shostakovich's most thrilling symphonic conclusions. Notice the insistent recurrence of the DSCH motif here in the final 3 minutes. While it might technically still be considered a part of the B section, I have chosen to label the ending a "coda" because it leaves behind the A and B theme materials to insistently and exuberantly celebrate the DSCH notes that weave throughout the entire work.
