Salmon are more than just a fish — they are connectors between oceans, rivers, forests, wildlife, and people. Their life cycle moves nutrients across entire ecosystems and shapes landscapes in ways few other species can. In this episode of The Regenerative Way, I sit down with renowned salmon biologist Stephanie Peacock to explore the incredible complexity of salmon populations and the challenges they face today. Stephanie Peacock is an ecologist, mom, and outdoor enthusiast based in Whitehorse, Yukon, on the traditional territories of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta’an Kwäch’än Council. Her work focuses on using mathematical models to make sense of complex, noisy ecological systems. Through her research on northern species like Pacific salmon, caribou, and muskoxen, Stephanie has come to appreciate not only what science can reveal—but also its limits, and the essential role of local and Indigenous knowledge in understanding ecosystems. When she’s not crunching numbers, you’ll usually find her outside, paddling her canoe or skiing whenever she gets the chance. 0:00 - Intro 2:38 - The Incredible 3000km Migration of Yukon River Salmon 5:56 - Steph's First Steps Into Salmon Research 10:10 - Unpacking the Impact of Sea Lice and Aquaculture on Wild Salmon 19:55 - Navigating Complexities of Salmon Life Cycle 25:29 - Climate Change and Hatcheries: Major Threats to Wild Salmon 30:05 - Understanding the Yukon Salmon Life Cycle 37:51 - The Ecological and Cultural Significance of Salmon 45:38 - Embracing Humility and Multiple Ways of Knowing in Ecological Research 51:44 - Disconning to Reconnect: Fostering Nature's Curiosity With Children #connectwithnature #ecology #naturevibes #conservation #naturelover #ecologicalbalance #salmon
