Yes! I am very proud to say: I have finished my very first art journal! In this video I take you with me on a new adventure. I will tell you how I came to the idea of making an art journal, I will share my stories about some of my favourite pages and of course, I will show you all the pages at the end of the video. It would be lovely if you let me know in the comments which is your favourite page! How I started my Art Journal: After painting on canvases and wooden panels for years, I recently discovered art journaling. On Instagram I saw an inspiring collaboration between Angela Smit ( / angelasmit.art ) and Claudia Kerssemakers ( / claudia.s_artbarn . I invited Angela to create one with me and from then we both bought a Dina Wakley journal and started. After a while I was addicted and I bought another book, the Blue book, to have a project for myself as well. That’s this book in the video. Of course I’ll share with you Angela’s book and my book, as soon as they’re ready. My favourite art journal pages and how I've created them: 'Schapen en meerkoeten' (Sheep and coots) I was inspired by some photos that I took on a walk through the Dutch polder, close to our house. The colour of green keeps everything together, it is in both of the landscape paintings, and also in the tape and the hortensia flowers that I've added. 'Buddha lost his head' I felt I wanted to paint the Buddha that fell on the ground in my studio. Before I started painting, I created a background of book pages and leaves and acrylic paint. Then I created the Buddha. On the right page I put some small elements, like a Tibetan wind flag. Also I came across the beautiful text, by Jeong Kwan, a Buddhist monk from South Korea, while watching the Netflix series 'Chef's Table'. (You can watch it here: https://www.netflix.com/title/80007945) The words, translated in English are: "Creativity and ego cannot go together. If you free yourself from the comparing and jealous mind, your creativity opens up endlessly. Just as water springs from a fountain, creativity springs from every moment. You must not be your own obstacle. You must not be owned by the environment you're in. You must own the environment, the phenomenal world around you. You must be able to freely move in and out of your mind. This is being free." 'Green flowers on a dark background' I painted this mainly with acrylic paint, except the fabric on the right page. At the end I created some details with pens and markers. 'Blue - Joni Mitchell When I bought this book, one thing was for sure from the start: I had to include a page of Joni Mitchells album and song 'Blue'. Since my early 20's I am a big fan of her music and this is a little ode to Joni. Blue is one of the best albums ever made, although she made many more beautiful songs. 'Cat Day' Once a year we - my cousin, her daughter and I - organise a Cat Day, a day filled with cat activities, like shopping cat items, playing cat games, painting cats or making a snow cat instead of a snow man. This page is dedicated to all the cats in the world, and of course to my cat Parel (Pearl). Text and images in my art journal What I love about journaling is that I can integrate text in the book too. I show you a couple of pages where I used quotes by Etty Hillesum and a sentence by Tjitske Jansen. The text by Etty Hillesum (out of her diaries) is: The inner world is just as real as the outer world. One must be aware of this. It also has its landscape, its contrast, its possibilities, its boundless areas. You are the smallest center where the inner and outer world meet, yourself. The two worlds are always nourished by each other. You can't neglect one, don't consider one more important than the other. Otherwise, the personality is impoverished. In one of my next videos I'll be chatting about the comparisons and differences between painting on canvas and journaling, and between writing diaries and journaling. I hope you like this video, please give it a thumbs up and subscribe if you want to know more about me and my art. Would you like to try art journaling too? It's so much fun.
