By the mid-1980s, his cocaine empire controlled 80% of the global trade, generating billions. Despite cultivating a "Robin Hood" image through public works, he was a ruthless mass murderer, unleashing widespread violence in his war against the Colombian government and rivals, largely to avoid extradition to the U.S. After a period in his custom-built "La Catedral" prison, Escobar escaped, leading to an intense manhunt. He was killed on December 2, 1993, marking the end of his reign and a turning point for Medellín.
