The Contribution of Mor Philoxenos to Eastern Christianity beyond the Syriac Orthodox Church | Dr. David Michelson. Urho, The Way, is extending the celebrations of the fifteenth centennial jubilee of Mor Philoxenus of Mabbug and organizing a series of lectures on Mor Phelexions. Stay tuned for an in-depth lecture and discussion on “The Contribution of Mor Philoxenos to Eastern Christianity Beyond the Syrian Orthodox Church” by Dr. David Michelson, Professor at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee. In this lecture, he examines the later influence of Mor Philoxeno’s work, writings, and reputation on Eastern Christianity beyond the Syrian Orthodox Church. Specifically, he hopes to reveal in more detail the legacy that Philoxenos has contributed to developing ascetic contemplative theology. This influence not only extended to other non-Chalcedonian churches (such as the Armenians and the Ethiopian Orthodox) but also to Chalcedonians, including Melkites and even the Greek and Slavonic philokalic traditions. His lecture is divided into three topics: 1. An overview of different historical perspectives on Mor Philoxenos: • How has he been received by the Syrian Orthodox faithful? • How have other Syriac communions viewed him? • What might we learn from the overlap? 2. He will examine “ecumenical” Philoxenos: The ecumenical legacy of Philoxenos, especially the influence because his texts were translated and circulated in Armenian, Arabic, Greek, and Ge’ez. Also, the Philoxenos of attribution, where the works of other authors were attributed to Philoxenos as they circulated across confessional lines in the Middle Ages. 3. He will examine how Mor Philoxenos’ works were recognized by later generations and shared across the East and West Syrian churches despite the Christological differences. Dr. Michelson earned his Ph.D. in History from Princeton University, and his teaching and research focus on the history of Christianity in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. In particular, he is interested in historical texts in the Syriac language. His first book, “The Practical Christology of Philoxenos of Mabbug” (Oxford University Press, 2014), analyzes the works of Mor Philoxenos of Mabbug (d. 523). Welcome to the lecture, “The Contribution of Mor Philoxenos to Eastern Christianity Beyond the Syrian Orthodox Church.”
