Knowing how to overcome fear of success, starts with developing an awareness that we’re even afraid of success in the first place. When we want to achieve something we’ve never done before, we’ll usually be feeling a lot of fear. Except it’s only really fear of failure that we’re aware of. Fear of success is the real killer because we’re not aware of it, and unless we have awareness of something we cannot change it. It all starts with your self image. How do you see yourself? Who do you see yourself as? Because if you don’t see yourself as a successful person, then to your self image - “success” is unknown territory. We’re biologically wired to stay away from the unknown. From an evolutionary perspective, the ‘unknown’ would often mean death. The ‘known’ usually meant safety, which meant survival and reproduction. If our ‘known’ self image is that we are a person who barely scrapes by and struggles, then to our biological programming, going into ‘unknown’ success territory is terrifying. We’re going to experience strong fear responses, and our subconscious mind is going to do what it can to steer us back into ‘known’ territory. Do you already ‘know’ that you’re successful? Does it feel natural and comfortable to actually imagine yourself living the life of the person you’re trying to become? We do not get the result, before doing what it takes to get the result. This means that until we actually see ourselves as successful, we will never maintain long term success. In some way or another, when we get a good thing going we will ALWAYS subconsciously find a way to self-sabotage in order to get back to our ‘known’ reality of scraping by and struggling. So how do we stop it happening? Well, we have to make success our ‘known’ territory. We have to feel more natural and comfortable experiencing ourselves as a successful person, and we have to feel detached from the identity of a struggling person. Meditation and interrogative affirmations are two fantastic ways to do this. Meditation Effective meditation with the intention of visualising your future self, experiencing the reality of your future self, and living the life of your future self, will start to teach your mind how it FEELS to be successful. When you do this repeatedly, this will start to become your new ‘known’ territory. Then your subconscious mind will start to gravitate you towards your ‘known’ territory with zero resistance. Interrogative Affirmations Interrogative affirmations help reprogram your self talk so that you actually begin to BELIEVE that you already ARE this successful version of future you. Normal affirmations are statements, such as “I am abundant, I am wealthy, I am successful”... The problem with statements is that the subconscious mind simply decides whether to accept or reject them. If you don’t see yourself as those things, the mind will reject them. Questions however, are handled by our subconscious differently. Questions have to be answered. And when the subconscious mind has answered a question, it’s extremely hard for it to then reject the answer. Because it’s come from itself. So Interrogative affirmations are asked in question form, such as “Why is it so easy for me to be successful?” When your mind answers the questions, it will start to reprogram itself with new beliefs automatically.
