Ave Verum Corpus (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart) sung by Immaculate Heart of Mary Choir @ St Joseph Church, (Victoria Street) Singapore, as a Communion Motet at the celebration of the Solemnity of Corpus Christi on Sunday, the 2nd of June 2024. Corrinne :"I first sang this motet back when I was a 17 year old student in Raffles Junior College, as a Soprano in the RJ Chorale. The piece made a deep impression on me because of its beautifully haunting melody and the lovely harmonic changes." "However, it is only now, decades later, that I'm discovering how the ultimate beauty of this piece of Mozart, is how it expresses his love for the Eucharist." "Mozart was Catholic and remained a devout Catholic throughout his life." [From Wikipedia : Mozart's parents (Leopold Mozart and Anna Maria Mozart) were Catholics and raised their children religiously, insisting upon strict obedience to the requirements of the Church.[1] They encouraged family prayer, fasting, the veneration of saints, regular attendance at mass, and frequent confession.[2] "How appropriate it is then, to sing this motet, not in some performance hall, or concert setting, but in the place in which it truly was meant to be sung, before the Blessed Sacrament, in the church, at Mass, on the great solemnity of Corpus Christi, the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ." (From Wiki) Ave verum corpus ("Hail, True Body"), (K. 618), is a motet in D major composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1791. It is a setting of the Latin hymn "Ave verum corpus". Mozart wrote it for Anton Stoll, a friend who was the church musician of St. Stephan in Baden bei Wien. The motet was composed for the feast of Corpus Christi; the autograph is dated 17 June 1791. The motet was composed less than six months before Mozart's death. It foreshadows "aspects of the Requiem such as declamatory gesture, textures, and integration of forward- and backward-looking stylistic elements".While the Requiem is a dramatic composition, the motet expresses the Eucharistic thoughts with simple means, suited for the church choir in a small town. Ave verum corpus natum de Maria virgine; vere passum immolatum in cruce pro homine. Cujus latus perforatum unda fluxit et sanguine, esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine. Hail, true body born of the Virgin Mary, who was truly sacrificed on the cross for man. May you whose pierced side flowed with blood be for us a foretaste as we come to think of death. The Immaculate Heart of Mary Choir, an all-volunteer church choir, is directed by Corrinne May. https://sjcvs.org.sg/ministry/the-imm...
