Myriam is an award-winning Franco-Irish Muslim journalist, filmmaker and writer, whose work has appeared on BBC, Channel 4, Al Jazeera, and other outlets. She’s the founder and CEO of mpwr productions, which specialises in documentary films that center minoritised perspectives. I talked to her about her directorial debut Finding Aicha (TX DATE TBC)follows Azdyne Amimour, the father of one of the Bataclan theatre attackers as he searches for his granddaughter who he has never met while seeking to understand how his son became an Islamic state terrorist. Azdyne Amimour is a working-class Parisian father and grandfather. At 74, he should be contemplating retirement. But his days are fuelled by the overriding goal of finding his missing granddaughter, and by an obligation to make amends for crimes he didn’t commit. On 13 November 2015, so-called Islamic State launched co-ordinated attacks on sites across Paris. Azdyne’s son Samy, 28, was one of three gunmen who killed 90 people at the Bataclan theatre. He himself was also killed. Samy left behind a daughter, Aicha, born in Syria shortly after the attacks. The film follows Azdyne who is still trying to come to terms with his son’s actions. Locating Aicha will be a step towards healing, but he doesn’t even know if she’s alive. Equally important to him is to make reparations to society. Out of the despair of 2015 a friendship forged with Georges Salines, whose daughter Lola was killed at the Bataclan. Together, the two engage with ex-prisoners, with a message of dialogue and unity.
