Hundreds evacuated as PH's most active volcano roars back to life | ABS-CBN News

Hundreds of residents living in the shadow of Mount Mayon in the Philippines have evacuated to emergency shelters following a sudden increase in volcanic activity. Footage captured on Tuesday shows Mayon releasing white-to-grey steam mixed with ash as its eruption continues. Residents from the restricted zone were seen boarding rescue vehicles and being transported to evacuation centres. Local authorities in Camalig, Albay Province, ordered the evacuation of more than 100 families from within the volcano’s seven-kilometre danger zone after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised the alert level to three on Tuesday. The decision followed a surge in hazardous activity, including pyroclastic density currents, increased rockfall events, volcanic tremors and visible ash plumes. The country’s five-level alert system indicates escalating severity in volcanic unrest. "Every night, we hear Mt Mayon rumbling, and we’re scared," a local woman said. "That’s why when they declared that we need to evacuate, we cooperated immediately." "We’re scared for our lives. I have a disability, and we also have kids to think about," she added. Despite the anxiety, some residents expressed relief at the swift response by local authorities and thanked officials for organising the evacuation. "We are thankful to our mayor for assisting with the evacuation of residents from Purok 7," one said. "It gives us peace of mind knowing we’re safe in case Mayon erupts." However, conditions inside evacuation centres remain challenging. Families are being housed in local schools, with classrooms converted into temporary living spaces. Mayon has erupted over 50 times in the last 400 years, making it the most active volcano in the Philippines.
