One of the most common questions I get is, "Do I have to have this surgery?". The easy answer is no, you never have to have any surgery. Of course, if you need surgery and don't have it there are consequences. There are three types of surgery: 1) Elective, 2) Urgent, and 3) Emergent. Every surgery that is done everyday around the world fits one of these three categories. Your surgeon should help you determine where your surgery falls and how long you have to make a decision. Don't get sucked into panicking and thinking you have no options. We almost always have options. Spoiler: if you need emergency surgery you probably won't even be the one making the decision.
