As a part of the Queensland Rail 150yr celebrations, American built wartime Locomotive 221a did a tour to Charleville. I was fortunate enough to be able to go out to work the Shuttle run to the first Crossing Station Arabella and return. I will never forget this trip as it was the last time that I worked together with my mate, Paul Ryan. He passed away 2nd of April 2016. These type of Locomotives with their light weight design were a common sight in the South West and Central Divisions of Queensland Railway, and were purchased to aid in keeping transport going during the Second World War. The Yank was a great engine to drive, but quite hard on the fireman, as they have a real appetite for coal when working hard and because of their low cab design, often a headache for the taller blokes on the shovel.
