Know Your Immigrant Rights with Shekinah Deocares & Cheryl Deptowicz- Diaz

For our final episode of Season 5, we talk with Senior Organizer at Pilipino Workers Center (PWC), Shekinah Deocares & attorney in family law & immigration law, Cheryl Deptowicz-Diaz. Shekinah (she/her) is a Filipina organizer born and raised in Los Angeles. Since 2019, she has been at Pilipino Workers Center fighting with and for community for immigrant and worker rights and climate justice. Cheryl Deptowicz-Diaz is an award-winning attorney and founder at Diaz Law Firm, a Southern California-based firm leading clients from the heart in the areas of family law, immigration, and litigation defense. With over 17 years of legal experience, Cheryl helps her clients through our complex justice system. As an immigrant and woman of color raised in inner-city Los Angeles, Cheryl has a unique perspective and compassion for her clients. Cheryl graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara with a Bachelor of Arts in Asian American Studies. She attended the evening program at Southwestern University School of Law while she worked during the day. She clerked for the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office and the Alliance for Children’s Rights before earning her Juris Doctor in 2006. She is licensed by the State Bar of California and admitted in all California courts. Her awards include the NAACP Excellence Award, Distinguished Service Award, Asian American Studies Highest GPA Award, Southwestern Law Writing Achievement Award, SuperLawyers, and Lawyers of Distinction, and more. Cheryl volunteers throughout Southern California and Northern Mexico conducting Know Your Rights workshops.
