Virginia Supreme, The Documentary (The Room Was Like My Face) is a documentarist video, an experimental performance- and music film, written and produced by the artist and musician Bess Barkholt aka BESS, with co-instruction by film-maker Mae Rafferty. The film deals with the artist herself and the process with making her forthcoming album ‘Virginia Supreme’, which is to be released in summer 2024 on Don’t Look Back Records (Copenhagen). The artist goes through a stream of reflection, performance and hangout with her friend, Mae (also the director), in a rare setting in the outskirts of London, an abandoned pub, where she lives and creates her work and experiments with herself as a performer and artist. The humorous and auto-poetic narration organically evolves into a more abstract form, as she rebelliously catapults us into an almost channeled state of mind, conveying poetry and wisdom through voice, bodily movement, words and sound. BESS (Bess Barkholt) aka Virginia Supreme questions the construction of femininity in modern media and in branding of women in the music industry and shows the audience a backstage insight into her world, with all its mess, in between thoughts, moments of beauty, self-doubt, genius-ness awkwardness and fun. The film can be understood as an absolute female gaze and heavy counter-act to the statistical result of the famous Bechdel test, showing the lack of female presence with agency in film history. She is educated a musician from the Danish Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen and holds an MFA from Royal College of Art London in Contemporary Practice, Performance- and Moving Image Pathways. BESS traverses genres and media and her artistic journey spreads as far as concerts, performances, dj’ing, video-and filmmaking, to writing and exhibition. Exactly that diversity forms the basis of the transformative scope and interest her works always points to, thinking about gender, identity, culture and capitalistic society and how it shapes us.
