(19 Jan 2019) Thousands of Russians took a dip in icy waters on Saturday to celebrate Epiphany - a major holiday in Orthodox Christianity, marking the baptism of Jesus in the river Jordan. Before believers plunge into the ice hole, the water is blessed by a priest according to the Orthodox tradition, making it holy and pure. Russian believers imitate the baptism by entering the water and ducking themselves three times either on the evening before Epiphany or on that 19 January feast day. Many make the sign of the cross, some others hold their noses. In and around Yekaterinburg, 30 bathing sites were equipped including open air pools and ice holes in ponds and rivers some cut in the shape of a cross. Emergency workers were also on hand in case anyone succumbs to the heart-racing shock of the icy immersion. Temperatures were considered mild this year – it was only -10 Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit) overnight.
