Barali ba Jerusalema composed by Michael Mosoeu Moerane

Michael Mosoeu Moerane (1909-1981) was born in Lesotho, and was active as a pianist, choirmaster and - most importantly - as a composer. In 1941 UNISA conferred a B. Mus. degree on Moerane. For the degree he composed a symphonic poem for full orchestra, 'Fatse la heso' [My Country], based on indigenous music. It received its first performance by the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1944 under Sir Clifford Curzon. Further performances of 'Fatse la heso' in New York and Paris, was pioneered by the black American conductor Dean Dixon. 'Barali ba Jerusalema' [O Daughters of Jerusalem] is an a cappella choral work that Hans Roosenschoon arranged for tenor and symphony orchestra. Deon van der Walt sang it in 1997 with the New Arts Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Gérard Korsten.
