“THE DARKNESS CAN ONLY CONSUME US IF WE PERMIT OURSELVES TO BE FED INTO.” The Darkness Between the Light is a 20-minute experimental micro-budget short film shot in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe (2025). This wordless, atmospheric piece blends art-house composition and minimal sound design to explore a single, urgent question: when the world inside you goes quiet and cold, what is required to keep you from being swallowed? A teenage girl wakes up in her home to find light failing, objects shifting, and silence elongating into something heavy and intrusive. Everyday things, like an overflowing bucket, a plate that becomes only bones, the stubborn darkness behind a light switch, all these become the film’s vocabulary. The house becomes a landscape of interior collapse: ambiguous, claustrophobic, and haunted by a presence that may be emotional, may be supernatural, or may be both. Rescue here is not cinematic heroics. It is presence: friends who knock, step inside, pour a glass, hum a tune, and hold space. As each person moves into a room the darkness once claimed, the film asks whether connection itself can act as a slow, patient form of light. Shot with minimal dialogue (the film contains no spoken lines) and was crafted by a young, primarily first-time crew, this experimental short film is intentionally ambiguous, designed to leave viewers curious and wanting more. It leans on long takes, tactile sound, and intimate camera work to invite interpretation rather than explanation. Created & directed by Maita Muradzikwa; written by award-winning poet Kassan J. Kassim; and produced by Daniel Nxumalo. The film is presented by Tayanatales with creative input from Kass Designs and produced by Acting Chief Images. Original score by Miles Hollington.
