This week we are covering the Archetypal Gesture of Lift and how you might use Archetypal Gesture as an artist might use a piece of clay to discover greater detail and nuance in your tactics and objectives. Also, we cover the five components that make the actor's objective playable, powerful, and filled with vitality. Finally, we'll review Michael Chekhov's Law's of Composition, Triplicity, Polarity, and Transformation with an exercise that will strengthen your Feeling of Form and Sense of Concentration in your acting work. Here are step-by-step instructions for "Lift" 1. Begin in a neutral stance: Feet shoulder width apart. Arms at your side. Chest open and radiating. 2. Inhale during steps 3 & 4. 3. With you eyes looking toward your hands, make a small step forward bending both knees. 4. Simultaneously, reach your hands downwards at roughly a 45º angle. Your palms should be flat and facing up. Your elbows should be extended but not locked. 5. Keep exhaling during the following. 6. Following your hands with your eyes, raise your hands and straighten your body. Your hands should end forward and slightly over your head if possible. 7. Make sure your palms remain parallel to the floor. Do not scoop or angle them parallel with your arms. 8. Change your eye focus to your scene partner, if you have one. 9. Using your creative imagination, imagine that the Lift Gesture doesn’t end at the end of the physical movement but continues through your radiating energy. 10. Once you sense the gesture is at an end, return to neutral. Do not rush the ending of the gesture or let it continue after you feel it has concluded. 01:32 – Step-by-Step "Lift" Instructions 03:30 – The Five Components of the Actor’s Objective 04:52 – Finding Specific Objective through General Archetypes 06:55 – Using the Three Laws of Composition with Archetypal Gesture 07:22 – Triplicity 07:46 – Polarity 08:26 – Transformation 08:56 – Form & Concentration Previous Videos in The Archetypal Gesture Series 1.
