Making a Hydrostatic Transmission Last Longer

It's possible that you may be damaging your transmission and not know it. On a car, you want to drive in the highest gear possible and at the lowest RPM, to save fuel. But, if you use the same logic to run the hydrostatic drive transmission on your tractor you may be building up a lot of heat and causing premature wear. Hydrostatic drive transmissions use the pumping of oil to propel the tractor. If you're in a high gear and you're barely pushing down the pedal to move the tractor, there's not much oil flowing and the oil tends to get hot more rapidly. So, to make the transmission last as long as possible, shift it down to a lower gear range and push the pedal down as far as you can and still safely operate the tractor. You're moving more oil and keeping the temperature down. While we're talking about this topic, there's one other component that you need to maintain. Many hydrostatic drive tractors have a separate oil cooler, usually in front of the radiator. Always make sure that the transmission oil cooler gets cleaned on a regular basis so it's free of debris. When the outside temperature is high in the summer and fall, about the time you're using your rotary cutter, those can get loaded with dirt and seeds and you could have a little oven baking your transmission. Brush hogging is really hard on hydro's and they hate heat. So its critical for the oil cooler to be clean and the pedal down to keep from having a costly repair.
