For 23 years, the brutal murder of 49-year-old Leslie Preer haunted her family and baffled investigators. On May 2, 2001, Leslie was found strangled and beaten to death inside her Chevy Chase, Maryland home. With no signs of forced entry, suspicion quickly fell on her husband, Sandy, leaving their daughter Lauren to defend him while the case went cold. But the truth was far darker and closer to home. The killer turned out to be Eugene Gligor, Lauren’s former high school boyfriend, who had once been welcomed into the family as if he were one of their own. Despite being on the police’s list of possible suspects back in 2001, Eugene slipped through the cracks and lived undetected for decades. He built a polished, successful life while Leslie’s murder remained unsolved. In 2022, investigators revisited the case and used forensic genealogy to track him down. A discarded water bottle confirmed his DNA as the match. Arrested in 2024, Eugene pleaded guilty to second-degree murder to avoid a life sentence.
