The May Bumps 1996 was held on the River Cam in Cambridge over four days, between Wednesday 12th June and Saturday 15th June 1996. The St. Catharine’s Men’s First VIII were positioned as the so-called “Sandwich Boat”, in between the First and Second Divisions. They actually finished the bumps in the same position as they started, “rowing over” each day without bumping anyone else, or being bumped themselves. This means that they completed the full course of about 2.5 km at “race pace” eight times throughout the four-day bumps! The weather was fantastic for these May Bumps, one of the highlights of an idyllic summer. The full crew list is: Bow: Mathias Reissmann 2: Iarla Kilbane-Dawe 3: Jonathan Gair 4: Peter Wothers 5: Steve Kelso 6: Paul Myers 7: Richard Mead Stroke: Piers Gatenby Cox: Mostyn Goodwin One of the main coaches of this crew, Rob Rippengal, sadly passed away in a mountaineering accident in 2006, just 10 years after this filming. A stalwart character in the Boat Club and wider College and University life, this video is dedicated to his memory. He can be seen on his bike riding beside the crew giving a practice start countdown around 00:46, and also speaking during many parts of the video. An historical note which may also be of interest… In the shot starting around 02:33, of the crew rowing up the river towards the start, you can clearly see the old Cambridge Gas Works installation which was demolished in the year 2000. Now in its place (near Cheddars Lane) is a riverside housing development and a Tesco superstore. There will be another instalment of this video series coming later, documenting another men’s crew from the same Bumps. A note about the making of the video… I recorded it using my old JVC GC-C7 VHS-C camcorder, coming down to the river after my own rowing was completed for the day (I was rowing in one of the lower St. Catharine’s boats), but never got round to polishing and completing it. Now however, after more than a quarter century has passed, and a recent reunion with a friend who was one of the crew members on a holiday in the UK, I decided to make the effort!
