Polling will take place across 121 constituencies spread over 18 districts, setting the tone for the entire two-phase election (the second phase is on November 11) and determining the fate of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) against the resurgent Mahagathbandhan. With the fate of 1,314 candidates, including political veterans and prominent debutants, to be sealed by the voters, this phase is a high-stakes referendum on the incumbent NDA and the challenging Mahagathbandhan. Also, the Prashant Kishor-led Jan Suraaj Party’s performance in recent bypolls suggests it can influence outcomes, even if it doesn’t win seats outright. This opening salvo covers a massive electorate, making up nearly half of Bihar’s total 243 seats. The Election Commission has mobilised an enormous force to ensure fair polling, emphasising webcasting from every polling station to enhance transparency. The districts going to polls stretch across central and north Bihar, including key areas like Patna, Vaishali, Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj, Munger, and Darbhanga. While the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA)—comprising the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Janata Dal (United), and allies—is banking on the dual appeal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s national image and chief minister Nitish Kumar’s long-standing governance record, the Mahagathbandhan (RJD, Congress, and Left parties) is relying on the youthful exuberance and economic promises of Tejashwi Yadav.
