As Bengaluru ushered in the New Year with a renewed focus on healthier and sustainable living, hundreds of residents participated in Walkaluru, a 26-kilometre walkathon conducted entirely on the city’s footpaths. Organised by Bengaluru Walks in collaboration with the Greater Bengaluru Authority, the citizen-led initiative aimed to highlight the actual condition of the city’s pedestrian infrastructure and assess whether people could walk long distances safely without stepping onto the road. Participants walked from Jayanagar to Yeshwantpur, covering large parts of the city over nearly six hours. Organisers said the challenge was designed to demonstrate that Bengaluru has the potential to become a walkable city if footpaths are properly maintained and used. Several participants appreciated the initiative, saying it offered an opportunity to experience the city at a slower pace while drawing attention to the quality and continuity of footpaths. Many said such events could encourage both the public and authorities to invest more in walkable and pedestrian-friendly spaces. Around 350 people joined the walkathon, underscoring growing public interest in pedestrian safety, walkability and sustainable urban mobility. #walkaluru #bengaluru #walkablecities #pedestrianinfrastructure #urbanmobility #citizeninitiative #newyearwalk #bengaluruwalks #ptinews #ptivideos #presstrustofindia Subscribe to PTI's YouTube channel for in-depth reports, exclusive interviews, and special visual stories that take you beyond the headlines. #PTIVideos PTI News : ptinews.com PTI Fact Check : ptinews.com/factcheck/factcheck.aspx PTI X (formerly Twitter): https://x.com/PTI_News PTI Instagram: / ptinews_multimedia PTI Facebook: / presstrustofindia
