In this video on Morphology of Angiosperms, Root cap is discussed. 1. Root cap Single root cap located at the root apex. Made up of thin walled cells. Mainly protective in function. Variations : 1. Pandanus (Screwpine) possess multiple root caps (all are multicellular also). 2. In hydrophytes like – Lemna, Pistia, Eichhornia, - root pocket is present. Root pocket act as balancers in free floating hydrophytes. 2. Region of meristematic activity Nearest to root cap. Cells are small-sized, actively dividing, thin walled and with dense protoplasm. Lack intercellular spaces. Maximum growth in root is just behind the root apex. 3. Region of elongation Cells undergo rapid elongation and enlargement. Central vacuole is present. This region is responsible for increase in length of root. 4. Region of maturation Elongated cells of region of elongation mature or differentiate here. Unicellular root hairs are found in this region. These absorb water and minerals.
