The tor yu (tuō yāo) is one of the 3 main foundational exercises in Yiquan, specifically Southern Yiquan which comes from the lineage of Liang Zipang. Moy Lin Shin was a student of Liang Zipang and this exercise is one of the main foundational exercises in the taiji and liuehebafa lineage that he taught and popularized. It loosely translates as ‘turning waist’. It features a rocking motion with weight shift from one foot to the other. The movement is generated from the core and transmitted out through the arms. I like this exercise due to its emphasis on opening and closing the Kua (Kwa) which involves a mobilization of the pelvic bones and the soft tissues and organs associations with this region. This can be observed as one side opens (as you shift back) to align over the back foot, all while the other side stays forward over the front foot. The pelvis does not turn as much as it opens. If done correctly, the abdominal obliques are very active and drive this movement. There are many variations of this exercise and the two I am showing involve a Yang coiling (which highlights a pushing motion) and a Yin coiling (which highlights a pulling motion). I am also demonstrating these two variations with gymnastic rings which makes this exercise more dynamic, adds a gentle strength building component, and increase the spinal mobility inherent in the toryu.
