Every Urban Design That RUINS Your Life Explained In 10 Minutes 0:00 Stroads 1:56 Car Suburbs 4:27 Highway Cuts 7:55 Parking Craters A stroad is what happens when a street and a road have a messy breakup but keep living together. The term was coined by American engineer Charles Marohn, and it perfectly describes those wide, confusing corridors that try to be both highways and local streets — and fail miserably at both. See, a street is meant for people — it’s where life happens: shops, cafés, sidewalks, and slow traffic. A road, on the other hand, is for moving cars quickly between places. But a stroad tries to do both — so you get six lanes of chaos.
