What are the ties alleged to be? Our Mike Wagenheim discusses with host Jeff Smith. Story: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party is demanding that the attorney general open a criminal investigation of political rival Ehud Barak for his alleged ties to American billionaire New York financier Jeffrey Epstein, recently arrested on sex-trafficking charges. The Likud is demanding that the former prime minister disclose his personal and business contacts with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, charging that Barak has refused to explain the reason for a 2.3 million dollar payment from the Wexner Foundation, said to be for "research.” The Wexner Foundation, led by billionaire Leslie Wexner of fashion retail giant L Brands, is a philanthropic organization that provides professional leadership training programs in Israel’s public sector and Jewish communities around the world. The foundation was a big client of Epstein, who allegedly contributed significant funds to it. In its letter to Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit, Likud claims that Barak was filmed from Epstein's apartment in 2016 and that his name is written in the sex offender’s “black notebook.” The Likud claims that "it is necessary to examine the explanation for the receipt of these funds, and whether these were the only funds given to Barak over the years in such strange circumstances and from whom." Epstein was reportedly taken into federal custody Saturday in Manhattan on charges of offenses against minors involving allegations dating back to 2002. A convicted sex offender, Epstein has been previously pleaded guilty to solicitation charges. The new charges come amid renewed scrutiny of the 2008 plea deal with federal prosecutors, including US President Donald Trump’s Labor Secretary Alex Acosta, that resulted in Epstein pleading guilty to lesser state charges. Trump, who is also seeking to distance himself from Epstein, whom he once called “a terrific guy”, said Tuesday he would be looking “very closely” at Acosta’s handling of the case that reportedly involved financial settlements with 'dozens' of victims. Trump told New York Magazine back in 2002 that he had known Epstein for 15 years and that he was “a lot of fun to be with.” “It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it – Jeffrey enjoys his social life,” Trump was quoted saying, while the two were photographed together at parties over a couple decades.
