‘You’ve turned Iran into a prison,’ shouted a protester in Karaj as protests erupted in Tehran and other Iranian cities this week to mark the third anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death. Subscribe ► http://bit.ly/subscribegdn The 22-year-old died in the custody of the Islamic Republic’s so-called morality police after allegedly violating the country’s strict dress code. During the ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ movement that followed, security forces killed more than 500 people, including at least 60 children, and arrested more than 19,000. Despite the danger, Iranians again took to the streets, chanting ‘death to the dictator’. Security forces set up checkpoints and clashed with demonstrators. Although smaller than the 2022 protests, the crowds once more called for an end to the regime, with defiant women telling reporter Deepa Parent they are leading chants despite years of repression and mass arrests. Many risk severe punishment – lashings, long prison terms or accusations of ‘collaborating with foreign media’ or ‘acting against national security,’ which under a draft espionage bill now under review could carry the death penalty. According to Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO), at least 940 people have been executed by the Islamic Republic so far this year. More than 40% of those executed were convicted of drug-related offences, while others faced broad charges such as ‘enmity against God’ and ‘corruption on earth’. The UN human rights chief Volker Türk has urged the Islamic Republic to impose an immediate moratorium on executions and to rescind the draft espionage bill, warning that it will dangerously expand capital punishment to cover online communication, work with foreign media and so-called ‘ideological alignment’. Over the past three years, Woman, Life, Freedom protesters accused of acting against national security have been charged with ‘corruption on earth’ or ‘waging war against God’. Activists fear the new bill could trigger a fresh wave of capital punishments. Read the latest news on Iran ► https://www.theguardian.com/world/iran #iran #mahsa_amini #mahsaamini #tehran #protests
