In this talk Dr Brophy reports on three seasons of excavations of the probable Neolithic cursus monument at Drumadoon on Arran. Excavations suggest this was a massive monument that had a complex construction process combining turf and stone, and that elements of the cursus may have been deliberately damaged at the end of its life. As well as describing excavation results, he reports on environmental science work and geophysical surveys that the project has carried out. This will be contextualised within a rich Neolithic on the island and within the broader cursus tradition on northern Britain. Bio: Dr Kenny Brophy is a Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Glasgow. He has over a quarter of a century of experience of researching, excavating, and writing about Scotland’s Neolithic and early Bronze Age. His main focus is mainland Scotland between 4000BC and 2000BC, and he has directed or supervised over 20 excavations relevant to this research strand since 1994 including the Strathearn Environs and Royal Forteviot (SERF) Project in Perth and Kinross. He is increasingly interested in the contemporary relevance of prehistory, and how prehistoric sites, ideas, and things are consumed and utilised in our contemporary society. He has an online presence, the Urban Prehistorian, under which name he writes a popular blog.
