HAVE you ever wanted an hour in the company of multiple Crufts best in show and Top Dog winners, and breeders of more than 100 champions to pick their brain? Well dogworld.tv has done the hard work for you. This week a Eukanuba-sponsored video is being launched on the DOG WORLD website, filmed at the home of this year’s Crufts best in show winners. Shortly after Sh Ch Afterglow Miami Ink, the American Cocker Spaniel, became the second Crufts best in show winner for Afterglow in just three years, the dogworld.tv team travelled to Lancashire to find out more about the dog who captured the heart of Jeff Horswell in the NEC Arena in March. Mike Gadsby and Jason Lynn have seen so much success in recent years, so dogworld.tv set up shop at Afterglow in the hope viewers can glean a little from one of the most successful partnerships in the history of the hobby. The interview uncovers what makes them tick, where the strengths or the partnership lie, their breeding philosophy, the history of the American Cocker Spaniel and why Miami was special even before winning the sport’s biggest prize. Miami’s show career has been a short one. “Crufts was actually only his ninth show,” said his co-breeder, co-owner and handler Jason Lynn. But Miami stood out from the very start, he said. “Something really special about him was that he seemed to be a combination of a lot of the dogs in his family,” he said. The inner workings of a kennel which can declare more than 100 champions in 18 breeds is a superb place to learn. Miami is far from the only American Cocker success story of the Blackpool-based kennel, and Mike explained that he believes some breeders are too focused on the ‘icing on the cake’. “You’ve got to have the essential parts of the dog right first - the size of the teeth, the temperament,” he said, “before focusing on the desirable traits.” He also explores his drive for more success: “I want to breed nice, healthy dogs with great temperaments, but within that I want to breed the next great one.” Jason said that when presenting a dog like Miami in the ring, most of the work happened before ever getting to a show. “Consistency of week-to-week maintenance allows you to arrive at a show like Crufts and have the dog in tip-top shape,” he said. Both Jason and Mike were attracted to the American Cocker separately, but why? All we’ll reveal here is that the success of the kennel can trace back to a stuffed toy and a broken car. A very short version of the interview was aired on DOG WORLD’s television programme Around the Dog World last month, but the full version is a superb further insight into the minds and practice of one of the most successful kennels and partnerships in the history of the dogdom. Makes sure you visit the DOG WORLD website to catch this one-off, special interview, and get to see Miami enjoying a muddy game or two in the Lancashire fields.
