How to make a blood orange cake For the cake: The zest of one blood orange 1/2 cup butter 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/2 – 1 tsp cardamom 1/4 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp salt 1 cup sour cream 1 tsp vanilla 1 tsp vanilla 1 cup sour cream 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour 2 eggs 2 tbsp blood orange juice 2 tsp baking powder Glaze: Juice of 1 blood orange + a few drops vanilla extract 3 cups of Icing Sugar - Add more if you need, to reach the consistency from the video Cooking: It is best to set-up and bake your decorative orange slices before, as they take a long time to bake. To bake them, preheat the oven to 220°F (105°C). Add parchment paper to an oven tray and place the slices of 1-2 blood oranges on it. Bake them for 2 to 3 hours or until they've dried out. After you've removed them from the oven, let them cool until you decorate the cake. After you've baked the orange slices, preheat your oven to 350°F(175°C) and start creating your cake mixture. In a bowl mix together butter, sugar, brown sugar and the orange zest until it becomes fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time and continue mixing. In a different bowl, mix together the flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon and cardamom. Then, add the flour mixture gradually to the other mixture (the one containing the eggs). As you add the flour, gradually add the sour cream as well. Pour the batter into a cake pan and bake for 35-45 minutes or until the cake is set. After you remove it from the oven, let it cool for 20 minutes. To prepare your glaze, mix together the icing sugar, vanilla and orange juice until thick and creamy. Check the video to see the consistency of the glaze. Pour the glaze on the cake once the cake has cooled. Decorate: Dip fresh rosemary into water and then coat it with sugar.
