I'm Dr. Chung, and I'm a Physical Medicine doctor here at The Polyclinic. I was inspired to go into medicine largely by my parents. My father is a scientist, or was a scientist, and my mother was an artist. Medicine, I found really combined both and really gave me satisfaction in both of those areas, left brain, right brain, creativity, problem-solving, science-based, working with people. I thought it was a really good mix of all of those influences. I had a pretty good idea out of high school that I wanted to become a physician, so I applied for and enrolled into a pre-med medical program, and after that, I entered medical school at the University of Michigan, completed my time there, and I did a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation. The first year was in general medicine. It was a standard internship, and the remaining three years at the University of Washington was in specific training for the field of physical medicine. What I do is I help to diagnose and treat problems that have to deal with function, so conditions where a patient has trouble doing something, either because of numbness or maybe it's pain or it might be weakness, in general, people are having trouble doing something that they want to do. My job is to try to figure out what it is that's causing that problem, whether it has to do with a muscle problem, a nerve problem, a bone problem, and try to diagnose it, make recommendations, manage treatment so that they can restore their function and regain what it is that makes them themselves. Come see me if you're having a problem doing something and it's affecting your quality of life and basically affecting your happiness.
