Please note this is a re upload video and has been edited, modified and hopefully improved since it's original which was uploaded in October 2019. Whilst the majority if it remains the same as the original, I have changed some of the background music in parts and added some additional text with information about the train and the journey. The original video, which can still be found on this channel, has reached over 7000 views in just over 12 months. I hope you will enjoy this one just as much! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Join me as I travel from Inverness to London Euston on the old "Classic" Caledonian Sleeper just days before it is due to be replaced by brand new carriages on the Highlander service. In 2015 Serco took over operations on the Caledonian Sleeper from Scotrail with the promise to replace all its carriages used on the service as part of their franchise commitment. In spring 2019, brand new Mark 5 coaches built by CAF came into service on the Glasgow/Edinburgh to London Euston Lowlander service but due to teething troubles with these trains, introduction of the new coaches to the Highlander service has been delayed until October 2019. The new trains offer en suite rooms and double beds, wifi and all the mod cons a traveller today expects including key card access to rooms. The new trains are marketed as hotels on rails. The Mark 3 and Mark 2 coaches which the new trains are replacing entered service on the sleeper in the 1980s and while they offer a certain amount of comfort, these do lack amenities which are expected by passengers today such as Wifi. Beds in the Mark 3 sleeper coaches are of a single bunk bed arrangement with the top bunk being folded away for first class occupancy of a berth. Space is limited in the cabins and corridors but this is perfectly manageable. The Mark 2 coaches provide space for seated passengers and the lounge car where passengers can have a bite to eat or a night cap before bed. GBRF are the traction provider for the Caledonian Sleeper, however at the moment on the Highlander service north of Edinburgh a hired in DB class 67 hauls the Inverness sleeper, with the Fort William and Aberdeen trains in the hands of GBRF class 73s. South of Edinburgh these trains are either hauled by hired in Freightliner class 90s or GBRF class 92s. Once the new trains come into service all portions north of Edinburgh will be class 73 hauled and all portions south of Edinburgh will be class 92 hauled ceasing the use of hired in class 67s or class 90s. The Lowlander sleeper already uses class 92s fully throughout. I have really enjoyed travelling on these old trains over the years and will be sad to see them go. Please enjoy this video I have put together of my journey between Inverness and London on the old Caledonian Sleeper one last time. It is slightly longer than I intended but this really is a last chance to look around these old carriages before they are retired. The stock for the train in this video as far as Edinburgh is as follows from front to rear: 67004 hauling 10553, 10598, 10693, 10501, 10614 (which was my coach), 10714, 1210 and 9810. At Edinburgh the train joins up with other portions from Aberdeen and Fort William and was then hauled to London by 90044. Both locomotives for the journey were hired in, and not GBRF locomotives. This arrangement will no longer happen with the new coaches as class 67s and class 90s are not compatible with Mark 5 carriages without being adapted. Please accept my apologies, I am not a professional video maker, and this is my first time using music as background to my videos in this way. I did my best and I hope you enjoy. If there is anything you wish to read during the video, feel free to pause and play as you wish. Date of journey 4th-5th October 2019. The carriages were withdrawn just days after this video was made, running their last northbound journey on Tuesday 8th October southbound jouney on Wednesday 9th October. The new trains are now in use on all Caledonian Sleeper services.
