Wide of news conference 11. SOUNDBITE (English) George W. Bush, US President: "We're working together to help the people of Burma. We responded very quickly when Burma was struck by the terrible cyclone and I want to thank you very much for your leadership on that issue. After all, yours was the place where much of the world's aid came to be distributed to the poor people there who were deeply affected by the storm. We want to see prosperity and freedom restored to Burma." 12. Camera cutaway 13. Bush finishes speaking, shakes hands with Samak and the two leaders walk off STORYLINE US President George W. Bush arrived in Bangkok on Wednesday evening and immediately travelled to a meeting with Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej. The Thai capital is Bush's latest stop on a three-nation Asian tour. Bush heaped praise on his Thai hosts, calling them strong allies in the so-called "war on terror". "Thailand's troops have helped the people of Iraq and Afghanistan as they battle extremists and strengthen democracy and I want to thank you for those contributions," he said, speaking alongside Samak at Government House. Bush also addressed concerns about Myanmar, Thailand's neighbour, which is ruled by a military junta. The junta has been getting increased attention at the White House, particularly since its slow response to Cyclone Nargis in May, which killed more than 84,000 people and devastated infrastructure, with many still in perilous straits. Myanmar is also known as Burma. "We're working together to help the people of Burma. We responded very quickly when Burma was struck by the terrible cyclone and I want to thank you very much for your leadership on that issue. After all, yours was the place where much of the world's aid came to be distributed to the poor people there who were deeply affected by the storm," said Bush. Bush noted he's meeting with exiled Myanmar activists while in Thailand, and his wife is travelling to the Myanmar border to visit a resettlement camp and clinic. "We want to see prosperity and freedom restored to Burma," he said. The US leader has several events scheduled in Bangkok on Thursday before flying to China to attend Olympic events. The same day of his arrival in Beijing, Bush plans to pointedly express "deep concerns" about the state of human rights in China and urge the communist nation to allow political freedoms for its citizens. Bush is to deliver the address in a Bangkok convention centre on Thursday morning to a crowd of foreign diplomats, Thai government leaders and business officials, before flying to China later that day.
