The Lost State of Franklin

In this episode we tell the story of the short-lived State of Franklin, the first attempt at self-government in Appalachia. When the men and women of the Holston and Watauga settlements petitioned for admission to the United States as a new state named in honor of Benjamin Franklin, they were rejected, so decided to go it alone. North Carolina soon claimed jurisdiction of the area, leading to frontiersman and Franklin governor John Sevier leading a rebellion against North Carolina, which came to a climax in the siege and battle at Colonel John Tipton’s cabin in 1788, essentially ending an Appalachian experiment in self-government.
