The legendary Oscar Mayer Wienermobile is touring Southern California - and it finally rolled down Route 66 into my own backyard. After 27 years of driving across America, chasing roadside oddities, historic highways, and classic Americana, this is the first true up close encounter with the Wienermobile. It has cruised through Eastvale, Chino, Whittier, Glendora, and Los Angeles - and today it’s spotted right here in Glendora. The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile first debuted in 1936, created by Carl Mayer, the nephew of Oscar Mayer, as a rolling advertisement during the Great Depression. Over the decades it evolved from a small custom-built hot dog car into the full-sized fiberglass fleet seen today. The modern Wienermobiles travel the country with official “Hotdoggers” at the wheel, handing out the iconic Wiener Whistles and continuing one of the longest running promotional traditions in American history. While in town, there’s also a walk through the Glendora Village district along Glendora Avenue near Foothill Boulevard, exploring surviving Route 66 era storefronts and classic highway architecture from the Mother Road’s early days. Before freeways bypassed it, this stretch carried travelers straight through town. From nearly 90 years of rolling history to original Route 66 pavement, this stop in Glendora blends two pieces of American roadside culture - the giant hot dog on wheels and the highway that made sights like it famous.
