International Max Planck Research Schools offer German and foreign students the chance to prepare for doctoral examinations at selected Max Planck Institutes and neighboring universities. The candidates take the actual Ph.D. examination at the respective university. The International Max Planck Research Schools are centers of scientific excellence in selected, innovative and interdisciplinary research areas, such as molecular biology, neuroscience, computer science, demography and plasma or polymer research. This new form of support for junior scientists and researchers is geared to both German and international researchers who are in the phase between the first qualifying exams and the doctorate. In cooperative efforts between Max Planck Institutes and universities, the doctoral study courses open up excellent educational and research possibilities for doctoral candidates. The institutes formulate a clear scientific focus and link the individual thesis topics. By establishing concentrations and having the doctoral candidates cooperate closely in research teams, the young scientists and researchers receive an added bonus.
