https://catalinbread.com/ This limited box set contains some of the building blocks to Ritchie Blackmore’s tone along with features that go beyond sheer imitation and into pure inspiration. In the days before overdrive pedals, it was common to use transistor based boosts. Like many, Ritchie Blackmore gravitated towards a Treble Booster to tighten up his Marshalls but not the common Ge Rangemaster, the silicon loaded version by Hornby Skewes was much more aggressive and really brought out the detail in his playing. At the heart of the Skewer is a faithful recreation but with added features much like the Catalinbread Naga Viper; an adjustable frequency range to go from fat bottom to traditional bite plus extra gain extraction from the transistor for those wanting to punish cleaner amps. The Skewer also has mods for lower noise and an internal master volume mod that Blackmore was said to have for better matching with his gear. That other gear of course is the unconventional preamp from an Aiwa 1011 tape machine. The Dreamcoat is an honest recreation of this very same analog preamp which delivers a special compression, texture and drive to the sound. Thanks to the added Saturation Control, along with a master volume, you can go beyond Blackmore and into exploding tweed amp tones and even fuzz, especially when stacking with the Skewer. The Dreamcoat also includes a versatile clean blend to adds back the attack of your clean signal which can be helpful when you want both sag and clarity. Completing the whole tone puzzle is a circuit that Ritchie’s tech Dawk Stillwell had added to his Strat to passively enhance certain frequencies. The Dreamcoat puts this booster into the Freq knob and you can hear this boost even with the Clean blend backed to 100% dry, making the Dreamcoat a tone sweetening tool. The internal trimmer selects between the stock 2.4K setting or 5K for extra zest for humbucker fans as well. With all these elements running into each other, the possibilities are endless and whether you’re looking for Blackmore’s tone or just want to take a different approach, the Skewer and Dreamcoat are designed to stack incredibly well with each other or other effects in your rig. For a limited time, the Catalinbread Skewer and Dreamcoat are being offered exclusively as a special box set and at a lower price before they are sold individually.
