Why Is This Indian Border Town Burning? Moreh, Burma Border 🇲🇲

There was a time, not long ago, when Moreh was the most vibrant pulse of Northeast India. It wasn't just a border town; it was a living, breathing experiment in Indian diversity and the absolute gateway to Southeast Asia. Known affectionately as the "Little Chennai" of the North, this unique pocket of Manipur was home to a massive Tamil diaspora that had settled here in the 1960s, bringing with them the smell of fresh sambar, the vibrant colors of South Indian temples, and a trading spirit that turned a remote jungle outpost into a billion-dollar economic hub. For decades, Meiteis, Kukis, Tamils, and Burmese traders lived in a delicate but beautiful harmony, making Moreh the ultimate symbol of India’s "Act East" policy. But the history of Moreh changed forever in May 2023. The ethnic violence that tore through the heart of Manipur did not spare this precious border gateway. In a flash of fire and chaos, the markets that fueled the livelihoods of thousands were reduced to charred skeletal remains. The shops that once sold everything from Burmese teak to electronic goods became hollow shells of soot and ash. The Tamil Sangam, the schools, and the homes that represented generations of struggle and success were caught in the crossfire of a tragedy that the mainstream world has largely moved on from. I traveled to Moreh two years after those flames went out, and what I found was a haunting silence that words can barely describe. I didn't go there as a news reporter with a political agenda; I went there as a vlogger and a traveler to stand on that ground and witness what remains. Walking down the main market road today feels like walking through a graveyard of dreams. The iconic Indo-Myanmar Friendship Gate, which sits at the 0 KM marker, still stands tall, but it is a shadow of its former self. The national flags of India and Myanmar that fly above it are now frayed and torn by the wind, looking out over a road that no longer sees the heavy convoys of international trade. In this video, I take you deep into the heart of this "Ghost Town." We walk past the rows of burned-out wooden houses where families once shared meals. we look at the rusted shutters of shops that haven't opened in over 700 days. Most importantly, I sat down with the locals who refused to leave—the people who are still living amidst the rubble, guarding the memories of a Moreh that used to be. They told me stories of how the town used to sound at 5:00 AM, and the chilling silence that replaced it. This is a story about more than just a border; it is about the fragility of peace and the human cost of conflict. It is an investigation into why the "Gateway to the East" is still in ashes two years later and what the future holds for the families who lost everything. If we don't document these stories, the world will forget that Moreh was ever more than a headline. This is the raw, unfiltered reality of the India-Myanmar border—a place where the friendship is broken, the trade is dead, but the spirit of the survivors remains. Watch this journey to the end to understand why Moreh matters to every single Indian, and why we cannot let this town disappear from our maps or our memories.
