Transcript: If you’re thinking about buying a stairlift, the number one question you’ll have is how much does one cost. Often it’s much less than you think so you may be pleasantly surprised – be sure to watch till the end when we’ll explain how you can save money on having one fitted. There are different models for straight and curved stairs. Straight stairlifts are much cheaper because they are fulfilled from stock, whereas curved models have made-to-measure rails to fit the bends of your stairs and therefore cost much more. You can buy a new or reconditioned second hand model and because there are many different models and features you can have on them the costs can vary considerably. You can also rent stairlifts too if you need one short term or prefer not to buy outright. To give you an idea of how much a stairlift is, for a new straight stairlift you could expect to pay around 1600 to 3 thousand pounds, with reconditioned models around a thousand to 1600 pounds. You may even consider renting a model instead of buying one with costs around 350 – 500 pounds initial payment and around £50 per month rental. As curved models are more complicated because of the bends in your stairs, a new one can cost around 3500 to 8000 pounds depending on the model and how many bends you need. Rental models can be from 1800 pounds and from around £75 per month. How do you make sure you are getting good value for money? Prices can depend on: • Manufacturers model – some models cost more than others, particularly if they are more technically advanced models – similar to the way Fords and BMW’s prices can vary • Features needed –you might need some optional extra features on the lift to be able to work it, like a powered swivel for example, which costs more than the standard manual swivel • Preparation work needed – to get the lift fitted it might need a powerpoint installing, or a radiator moving out of the way which can add to the cost • Maintenance and warranty backup – check to see what warranty period there is and servicing. What happens if you need an urgent repair? Can you get an engineer 24/7, 365 days a year, and get someone out within a few hours of making a call? The best way to get an exact cost of having a model fitted is to have a stairlift company visit your home to measure and assess your stairs as well as your needs and give you a written quotation. If you have a long term disabling health condition you will also be exempt from paying VAT, just check with the company to see if you qualify. You may be able to get a lift for free. Social Services provide means tested disabled facilities grants, where your proof of income and savings will be required to see if you qualify. Also, ask your authority what their waiting times are as sometimes you could wait many months for an occupational therapist referral and grant to be approved. If you don’t want to wait or have the money to pay for it yourself, you may want to purchase one privately.
