A C-section is a surgical procedure in which the baby is delivered through an incision in the mother’s abdomen and uterus. C-section deliveries are usually performed when vaginal delivery poses risks to the mother or child. When fetal distress is present, C-sections are typically recommended and required. Fetal distress is an obstetrical, labor and delivery complication involving abnormal fetal heart monitoring that occurs when the fetus experiences oxygen deprivation (asphyxia). It is detected by changes in heart rate, decreased fetal movement and abnormal substances in the amniotic fluid. Because fetal distress is an emergency complication, medical professionals must immediately address and manage it to avoid HIE and permanent injury. If you or your loved one were permanently injured as the result of a C-section mistake, HIE, or birth injury, we encourage you to reach out for legal help from the birth trauma legal and medical team at Reiter & Walsh, P.C.
