Topic 5: Integrated pest management for varroa The Australian Honeybee Industry Council (AHBIC) in partnership with AgriFutures has launched a suite of varroa mite management resources. This suite of resources follows the completion of the resilient beekeeping in the face of varroa project, an AgriFutures Australia research initiative. This projects been a key focus for the AgriFutures Honey Bee & Pollination Program following the incursion of varroa mite in June 2022. More recently, in September 2023, it was announced that the eradication of varroa was no longer technically feasible, leading to a transition to management phase that aims to slow the spread and limit the impacts of varroa mite across Australia's landscape. The project aims to support the industry through this phase in what is arguably the biggest challenge it has faced. Each week, a range of resources including a set of fact sheets that focus on the key areas of concern, namely biosecurity treatment management breeding, bee health, pollination, and slowing the spread of varroa will be released complemented by a series of interviews, articles and podcasts to ensure accessibility for beekeepers across various platforms. The resources feature interviews with global experts and concentrate on the lessons Australia can draw from the role of management practices overseas, as well as the potential implementation of these strategies in the Australian beekeeping context. In the fifth interview in the series, we talk to Elizabeth Walsh, Honey bee breeding, genetics and physiology research lab - US Department of Agriculture on integrated pest management for varroa.
