El Greco is a 1998 album by Vangelis, made as a tribute to the painter El Greco. It grew out of a 1995 limited-edition release but adds three new tracks and reshuffles the rest. All ten pieces flow into each other, creating a single, continuous journey rather than separate songs. The music mixes a Byzantine feel with modern synthesizers. There’s a choir led by Ivan Cassar, and you hear soprano Montserrat Caballé and tenor Konstantinos Paliatsaras on a couple of tracks. The overall mood is dark and moody but still feels intimate, like the music is painting scenes inspired by El Greco’s work. On the cover, you see El Greco’s “The Knight with His Hand on His Breast,” linking the album directly to the artist. Vangelis wrote, arranged, and played everything himself.
