The fort is famous for the Battle of Sinhagad in 1670, when Tanaji Malusare, under the command of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, led a daring night assault to reclaim the fort from the Mughals. The fort’s steep cliffs were scaled with the help of a trained monitor lizard named Yashwanti, and after a fierce battle, Tanaji was martyred, but his brother Suryaji Malusare took over and captured the fort, which was renamed Sinhagad in honor of Tanaji’s sacrifice. Shivaji Maharaj, deeply saddened by Tanaji’s death, famously said, "Gad ala, pan Sinha gela" – "The fort is conquered, but the lion is lost." After the death of Sambhaji Maharaj, the fort briefly fell into Mughal hands, but it was retaken by the Marathas in 1693. The fort played a significant role in the Maratha Empire until it was finally secured by the Marathas in 1706. Today, Sinhagad Fort is a popular trekking destination and a symbol of Maratha valor. It remains an important historical landmark, attracting visitors with its scenic views and rich heritage.
