(29 Jul 1995) English/Nat A rallying cry for the China-born human rights activist who's now a U-S citizen Harry Wu was held in Washington D-C on Saturday. Protesters gathered in front of the White House in a show of support for Wu and to demand his release. Wu was taken captive by the Chinese last month. A hot summer's day in the U-S capital brought a rallying cry for Chinese .American Harry Wu. Hundreds gathered at Lafayette Park calling for the release of the human rights activist who was taken captive in China last month. Wu, an avid spokesperson for democracy who's been detained once before, was taken into custody by the Chinese government for illegally entering the country. Haiching Zhao, President of the National Council on Chinese Affairs, urged U-S President Bill Clinton to fight for Wu's release. SOUNDBITE: "Please put pressure on the Chinese government we know the pressure from the U-S government will work if it's genuine if it's real and please put pressure on the Chinese Government - urge them to release Harry Wu." Similar rallies are being held in various other cities around the world. Maranda Syeh, President of the Greater Washington Network for Chinese Democracy and a friend of Wu's, delivered a message on his behalf. SOUNDBITE: "We have to stress that even if he's not here we will keep on doing the work as he did. And even if they detain him or arrest him, that won't affect it. And truth is truth and everything has to come out." SUPERCAPTION: Maranda Syeh, President, Greater Washington Network for Chinese Government. Campaigners are hoping the Chinese authorities will bow to mounting international pressure and release Wu shortly.
