Many years ago, after discovering Squamish, I tried convincing everybody I knew to come on this ride with me. For three years I asked them all, for three years they said no. Not many people like climbing, especially a 1000m +. Then came the day I had to move away, so I went it alone. I threw my whip on my whip, and ripped up the Sea to Sky highway to Diamond Head, my favorite riding zone in Squamish. The plan was simple, ride and record my favorite three blue flow trails, Meadow of the Grizzly, Half-Nelson, and Pseudo Tsuga, then go to Mags 99 as a reward. It was a beautiful day, a ripe blue sky between towering Douglas Firs. I packed all the food I could carry, water too, then started up the Legacy Climb Trail, correctly named - Stl’halem Sintl’. I remember being amazed at how many loamer trails there are between the switchbacks on the upper climb section, thinking, the next time I come back I’m coming down this trail not up. When I finally got to the the top of the climb I ran into some people I had met in the parking lot. They thought I was crazy, and offered to shuttle me the rest of the day. Politely I refused, a man on a mission doesn’t have time for common sense. Meadow of the Grizzly did not disappoint, it was obvious a lot of work had been done on it. With so many of the drainage issue now fixed, the endless flow was mesmerizing. After Meadow, I slugged back up to Half-Nelson, and had an equally amazing time. The trail was in perfect condition, the dirt heroic. In no time flat I found myself slugging it back up the climb trail to Pseudo Tsuga, were I finally took a rest. There’s nothing more meaningful than being aware in a moment, I knew I was riding well, I knew it would be the last time in a long time, I could feel a deeper connection with Squamish, to the giant trees around me - I was at peace. Back in the parking lot I really took my time putting my bike back on my W800, trying to savor everything. Squamish is magic.
