He stood at the river’s edge, staring at the structure that loomed over the land like a forgotten deity. The citadel had no name, no records, no history that anyone could confirm. It had simply existed, buried in time, waiting. The sky above it churned with low-hanging clouds, their swollen forms spilling mist into the valleys below. The trees were skeletal, their limbs blackened, twisted as if recoiling from something unseen. He moved forward, his boots sinking into the cold earth, the wind whispering through the empty archways ahead. The walls of the citadel were weathered, scarred by time, but still they stood—imposing, unyielding, as if the very concept of decay had never been meant for them. The moment he passed beneath the massive threshold, the silence deepened. It was not the absence of sound, but the presence of something else—something vast, something listening.
