Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) | KeezhVenmani Martyrs Day | Nagai | Memorial Pillar Venmani Martyrs Day On December 25, 1968, in kilvenmani village, Thanjavur district, (Now Nagapattinam) Tamil Nadu, 44 Dalits from the Dalit communities were brutally massacred by feudal landlords of the Naidu caste. The conflict arose after agricultural laborers in the Tanjore district formed a union demanding better wages and working conditions. Angered by their demands and unity, landlords retaliated by dismissing union members, hiring external laborers, and resorting to violence. The tensions escalated when a union supporter was kidnapped and beaten, leading to a clash in which one of the landlords’ agents was killed. That night, the landlords and their henchmen attacked the Dalit laborers, firing at them and trapping women, children, and the elderly in a hut, which was locked and set ablaze. Despite attempts to escape, 44 lives were lost in this horrific act of caste violence, marking one of the darkest episodes in Tamil Nadu’s history The incident is known as the Kilvenmani massacre. Every year the massacre is commemorated as “Venmani Martyrs Day” It is to be noted that the DMK government, which was in power when the incident happened and also when the prime accused Gopalakrishna Naidu got acquitted, did not handle the case well. The state acted as a friend of the accused. Maanjolai massacre of 1999 and Vengaivayal incident of 2022 show that nothing has changed over the years. 56 years on it still reminds a tragic reminder of the violence endured by Dalit agricultural laborers in the face of oppressive feudalism and exploitative capitalism. This brutal event highlights the deep-rooted social inequalities and the ongoing struggle for dignity, justice, and rights for marginalized communities. Social change cannot occur without addressing caste and class divisions. The Keezhvenmani massacre, independent India’s first well-documented atrocity against Dalits, symbolizes this struggle and highlights the intertwined struggles of caste and class oppression.
