Chinese vice commerce minister says US tariffs hamper global economic growth

(12 Jul 2018) China's Vice Minister of Commerce has labelled the United States a "trade bully" and says the tariffs it has imposed are hampering global economic growth. Wang Shouwen said on Thursday that despite progressive talks between the two countries, the US went ahead and started a trade war anyway. "For any talk to be useful, one party needs to be keeping its words," Wang said. He added, "if one side keeps chopping and changing all the time, the talks would be pointless." The US, Europe and others want the World Trade Organization to overhaul its rules to take into account industrial policy, state-owned industry and other issues over which Beijing has sparred with its trading partners. Wang admits the WTO could make improvements but added "I think the statement that says WTO rules are insufficient to deal with problems from China is a statement of exaggeration, is an alarmist point of view."
