Harm reduction is an approach that promotes health in a way that meets people where they are, accepting that not everyone is ready or capable of stopping their substance use at a given time. We had a conversation about the value of providing evidence-based methods for mitigating health risks associated with substance use. Too often, stigma plays a major role in the barriers to receiving harm reduction initiatives, including medical care, disease prevention, education, and addiction treatment. Harm reduction focuses on the prevention of harm rather than the prevention of substance use itself.
